When ambient air is compressed, its pressure increases, causing its temperature to rise. However, the volume of the air decreases, reducing its capacity to hold gaseous water vapor. The temperature must then be lowered to condense and separate this vapor before it reaches downstream applications.

The Thermodynamics of Condensation & Dew Point Control
