Screw air compressors rely on oil to seal the clearance between the rotors, lubricate the bearings, and dissipate heat from compression. This process creates a mixture of highly atomized air and oil. The oil separator is tasked with separating this mixture through a multi-stage process of mechanical intercept, inertial impaction, and coalescence.
Before entering the separator element, the air-oil mixture enters the receiver vessel tangentially. This path causes the heavier oil droplets to collide with the vessel wall, dropping out of the air stream and collecting at the bottom of the tank. This preliminary stage removes over 95% of the oil, leaving only fine aerosols to be processed by the separator element.
